Berger Peat Moss wins the Regional Innovation Award
What is the contest?
The Health and Safety at work Innovation Prize from the CSST is a contest held in different regions throughout Quebec. It allows workers and employees to share the initiatives that they’ve taken – new prevention methods, equipment adaptation or safe working methods – to eliminate the potential hazards in their working environment.
*(CSST - Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec)
What permitted Berger Peat Moss to win first prize in the Lower St-Lawrence region?
The construction of a Safe loading dock
Problem to solve:
The loading dock was old, inadequate and dangerous. The employees had to lift and place the heavy steel platform that was used to load trailers. This platform had an inclination of approximately 1 meter (39’’). The lift had to go up the platform to go place the pallet on the trailer; there was always a risk for the lift to skid and roll over.
Preventive measures and results:
The health and safety committee agreed to demolish the old loading dock. We replaced it with a new concrete loading dock equipped with a hydraulic loading ramp that rises to attain the height of the trailer. The loading operations are significantly improved and a much safer. The injuries caused by excessive efforts have been eliminated to the workers greatest satisfaction.
What is the next step?
Berger Peat Moss is a finalist to receive the provincial honours during a ceremony held in Quebec city on April 8th, 2008.
