On February 17th JR Johnson and Berger hosted our first Berger Grower Fest. The MDEIE Recognizes the Peat moss Industry and Its Partners

The president of the "Créneau Valorisation de la Tourbe et des Technologies Agroenvironnementales" - Lower St.Lawrence region, Claudin Berger, received the trophy as finalist at the second Grand rendez-vous des créneauxd'excellence (an awards ceremony recognizing niches of excellence) took place in Québec City on Monday, October 26, bringing together 360 economic actors from all parts of the province, including 200 business leaders. On hand at the event was ClémentGignac, the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade. The event highlighted the achievements of the (approximately 50) niches set up and coordinated by the Ministère duDéveloppementéconomique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation (MDEIE) to promotea production system that encourages regional development. The Bas-Saint-Laurent region’s committee for the promotion of peat moss and agro environmental technologies, the comité du créneau ACCORD Valorisation de la tourbe et des technologies agroenvironnementales (VTTA),would like to underscore the MDEIE’s recognition of the committee’s 2008-2009 activities.The créneauVTTA was one of four (4) niche finalists for the Créneau de l'année prize.The jury mentioned specific qualities of the niches singled out for recognition;their first-rate annual statements of account, performance indicators and capacity for mobilization.

As of October 12th, 2009, Ms. Valerie Berger has been nominated Corporate Sales Director of Berger Peat Moss. Ms. Berger will be responsible for all sales activities at Berger Peat Moss. Ms. Berger has an MBA in International Management combined with many years of International sales and management experience. Maximize Growth and Productivity

At Berger, a lot of emphasis is put into providing high quality peat based growing mixes to our valued professional growers. However, it is important for us that you maximize growth and productivity in your greenhouse and this why we put together some helpful guidelines to help you maximize your greenhouse production.

1) Greenhouse Preparation

Wash down gutters, sidewalls, benches and floors to remove old crusted algae and other debris.
Remove dead plant debris from under the benches (host sites for diseases).
Remove weeds (host areas for diseases and insects).
Spray area with a disinfectant.
Fix leaks and heavy drip areas, puddles of water become host areas for algae and fungus gnat.

2) Environmental Control check-up

Check aspirators to replace worn out humidity wicks, clean water reservoirs, clean and check aspirator fans.
Verify to make sure that in house thermometers are still intact and at plant level.

3) Container preparation

If re-using pots, flats, trays, or containers, clean and disinfect old crusted algae (soil debris can re-establish algae, fungus gnat and disease).

4) Feed injector tune-up

Have injectors been checked for proper dilution rate? (i.e 1:100, 1:200, etc.).
Check out for warn out “O” rings in dosatron and dosmatic units.

5) Sufficient quantity of mix for production

Make sure that you have enough mix for production.
Check production dates to insure uniform and consistent wettability.

6) Clean and calibrate pH and Ec meters

Check batteries in pocket models

7) In house testing

Familiarize yourself with an in house testing procedure for Ec and pH. Adopt a method and utilize it through the production

8) Water quality Analysis

Know the quality of your water by having it analysed.

Opening of new bog in Manitoba

Event: Opening of Hadashville, Manitoba Peat Bog and Production Plant For over 45 years, Berger Peat Moss, Ltd. has been harvesting peat moss in Quebec and later in 1986, harvesting began in New Brunswick. Over the years, this family owned business has built a solid reputation at an international level by providing high quality products and services to professional growers in over 15 countries. The ISO 9001:2000 certification combined with Berger quality control management have and continue to be an integral part of Berger’s operations. Today Berger installations can be found in Quebec, New Brunswick, Texas and since July 15th, 2008, a new installation in Hadashville, Manitoba. Today, the Berger team includes over 300 dedicated workers who have widely contributed to the success of Berger. The new Hadashville operations required a $6 million investment and there has been a lot work behind this project. We are extremely thankful for those who have participated in this project in making it a success. The opening of the Hadashville operations, will permit us to create approximately 20 new jobs and enable us to provide quality products to new territories. Today, September 10th, we are proud to officially celebrate the opening of the Hadashville operations.

Canadian harvest of professional grower peat at critical levels.

ST. ALBERT, Alberta, Canada (September 8, 2008)

The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA), whose members represent 95% of the North American peat production, is concerned with the level of harvest for the 2008 season.

According to Paul Short, CSPMA President, the Canadian peat harvest, at the end of August is only at 43% and carry-over inventory at 17%. This is a record low of 60% in comparison to the last 5 year average of 75%. The inevitable result will likely be a shortage of professional grower peat.

Abnormal and persistently wet conditions throughout all Canadian peat harvest regions have impacted the ability of the industry to harvest expected volumes. The area most hard hit is Eastern Canada, with New Brunswick and Quebec accounting for 66 % of all of Canada’s peat production. The outcome is that the peat moss industry is facing one of its poorest peat harvest seasons on record.

The peat industry is committed to working cooperatively with its commercial business partners to minimize the short and long term impacts for the horticulture industry.

Berger’s 45th anniversary.

It has already been 45 years since Berger produced and sold it’s first bag of peat moss. This year represents Berger’s 45th anniversary.

A fourth generation family member joins the team

A fourth generation family member joins the team. Berger is pleased to welcome Valerie Berger to the team as Director of Special Projects. Ms. Berger has an MBA in international management combined with many years of management experience.

OM 1 Organic All Purpose Mix

This organic mix uses selected coarse Canadian sphagnum peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, composted peat and organic starter charge providing plants with the ideal root environment leading to a rapid root growth and healthy uniform crop. The OM 1 is ideal for a wide variety of plants.

OM 6 Organic High Porosity Mix

The combination of coarse Canadian sphagnum peat moss and horticultural perlite or PBH rice hulls provide the ideal structure for water sensitive plants. The OM6 offers quick drainage and high aeration leading to a strong and healthy root structure. This mix is also available with a pelletized organic fertilizer, organic compost or organic fertilizer starter charge.

OM 4 Organic Fertilized Peat Moss

The controlled particle size of this 100% Canadian sphagnum peat moss organic mix provides excellent water holding capacity combined with ultimate porosity. The OM4 offers an ideal root environment towards the development of a strong rooting structure and an optimum plant growth.

OM 2 Organic Germinating Mix

This family of organic germinating mix uses a combination of high quality fine Canadian sphagnum peat moss, fine perlite and fine vermiculite. The OM2 will provide the ideal root environment for a uniform germination and rapid root development.

THE GARDENER Professional (Soilless mix)

Made from high quality sphagnum peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and compost, this mix has all of the characteristics of a professional growing mix with the combined advantages of a rich and well-balanced compost.

Berger Professional Growing Mix

Berger Professional Growing Mix, used by professionals for a wide variety of plants, is now available in small, light, one- cubic.-foot. compressed bags with an easy carry handle. Specially formulated for potting and seeding plants.

BM2 (Euro MIX)

This aggregate free germinating mix provides you with the ideal growing conditions for developing strong healthy roots. The structure and particle size of the peat moss provides the roots with excellent air porosity and water holding capacity.

BM4 (Euro MIX)

This aggregate free mix uses a combination of the finest quality Canadian sphagnum peat moss giving your plants excellent water flow and air capacity as well as solid root anchorage.

Hanging Basket and Planter Mix (with polymer)

Berger Hanging basket and Planter Mix is specially formulated for a wide variety of plants and flowers, both in hanging baskets and flower boxes. This mix contains a polymer, that increases the ability of the growing mix to retain water and reduces the need for watering (by absorbing water and releasing it to the plant at a later time). Perennial Mix

Berger Perennial Mix is a rich blend of Canadian sphagnum peat moss, sand, composted bark and perlite, providing ideal plant support and an air/water ratio that promotes root development. This mix is good for most perennials.

Potting Mix

BP-P (Professional peat moss)

BP-P is an all purpose peat used for soil conditioning or the preparation of balanced growing mixes. It is the most popular peat moss on the market.

BP-F (Fine peat moss)

BP-F, made from pure and finely screened peat moss, provides the consistency professional producers demand. It is excellent for forestry seedlings, for plants whose roots require high levels of moisture and for soil preparation.

BP-SF (Super-Fine peat moss)

BP-SF is made from very fine particles of peat moss. It is particularly good for seeding mediums, hydro-seeding and soil amendments. It is the cleanest peat moss available on the market.

CB MIX (Custom blends mix)

BM8 (Composted peat mix)

The addition of our highly managed compost to this product line, gives you the advantages of the presence of micro-organisms which are beneficial to your plants growth. Further, it increases the water retention, the cation exchange capacity and the apparent density. The structure of the compost also improves the water distribution in the media.

BM7 North or South (25%Bark mix) *Available with 35% and 45% bark

Produced with composted black spruce bark in Canada. These bark mixes ensure an excellent anchorage for the plants and balanced air/water ratio for efficient root development. These mixes are ideal for general application as well as perennials, shrubs and trees.

BM6 (High porosity)

Mixes in the BM6 group, have been formulated for water sensitive and winter plantings. The combination of coarse peat and horticultural perlite encourages quick drainage and high aeration, thus reducing excess irrigation.*

BM4 (Fertilized peat moss)

Ideal for plants needing a high water reserve, the BM4 mixes are composed of top quality peat moss with an added starter charge and wetting agent. This group is also an excellent base for your own mix for potted plants or seeding, inquire for the different available BM4 grades.*

BM1 (All-purpose)

This family of all purpose mix is ideal for a wide variety of plants. Its composition of long fibre peat moss, perlite, vermiculite and starter fertilizer charge promotes a rapid root growth and uniform crop.

BM2 (Germinating mix)

This group of mix is specifically formulated for seed germination in either plugs, trays or floating system. Composed of specifically designed particle size peat moss, perlite and vermiculite, the BM2 mix series promotes uniform germination and rapid root development.
